Local Area Highlighted in 2017 List of Safest Cities in California

5 local communities land in the top 100, with 4 in the top 25!

LAMORINDA, CA — Some people make safety a top consideration when selecting where to live. Danville, Moraga, Orinda and San Ramon all cracked the top 25 with Lafayette still claiming the Top 100.

In fact, Moraga and Orinda are in an elite group that reported fewer than ten total violent crimes.

The rankings are compiled based on the most recent FBI crime reports (2015 statistics were used for the 2017 list). Overall, California’s 50 safest cities reported about 13 crimes per 1,000 people in 2015, compared to the national average of nearly 29 crimes per 1,000 people.

California’s 50 safest cities boast exceptionally low property crime rates, too. For instance, approximately half of these cities reported fewer than 100 burglaries, and only one city on the list reported more than ten arsons.

To identify the fifty safest cities in California, SafeWise reviewed the 2015 FBI crime report statistics and population data. All cities with fewer than 10,000 residents were eliminated, as were cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI. Violent crimes and property crimes were tallied. To level the playing field, the rankings are based on the likelihood of crimes occurring out of 1,000 people in each city.
